“Michelle is not going to be anything like what we have seen in the White House before,” says Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton, who has observed the likes of other trendsetting Democratic First Ladies like Hillary Clinton during her nearly 20-year tenure in her Washington, D.C., district. “She talks like one of us. Her cadence—notwithstanding the elegance of her speech—reminds us of ourselves, our sisters and our mothers. “You get the impression that she will never lie to him about how he’s doing and she will speak up,” Norton adds. “She is obviously in love with her husband but she is not a bat-the-eyes-and-smile-at-everything-you-say wife.”
